Opportunities to Support Your Local Schools (Oct 2009)

 

The other day I attended a K-12 Program Management Team meeting at my job. I just want to first mention my appreciation for having that benefit.

 

 The team leader began with an explanation of the FIRST and BEST programs. Both support high schools in the design of robots for local, state and national competition. I entered the field of engineering with the dream of designing R2D2s or Terminator like androids. Time tells while observing the bright youth, involved in the FIRST and BEST activities, following some of my same dreams.

There are four programs, for various grade levels, in the FIRST - Junior FIRST LEGO League, FIRST LEGO League (FLL), FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), and FIRST Robotics CompetitIon (FRC). Please click here to visit the  websites of  FIRST groups and activities close to you.

 

Explorer’s was another program discussed at our meeting. Boeing Helicopter, in Ridley Park, PA offers 6 Explorer workshops, every two weeks from 6 to 8 pm, starting in January 2010. Last year the participants toured Boeing’s composite shop, assembly lines and other job sites sparking career interests in the young students. Boeing’s Explorer program registrants must be American citizens (for gov’t export compliance), enrolled in high school and between the ages of 14 to 21. The colloquy wrapped up with suggestions of introducing engineering management and business components.
