Hydraulic Guidelines
for CSO Drop Shafts
Instructor: Jozef F. Zurawski, PE

This one hour course is intended for civil, geotechnical, sanitary and structural engineers but will be of interest to project and plant engineers who work for or with sewer and water and other utility companies.

Many interceptors and Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) projects in the US require deep tunnels for conveyance and/or storage of overflows to minimize CSO occurrences of untreated flows. Existing near surface sewers must be connected to these deeper facilities requiring special drop arrangements. This course provides overview of hydraulic and construction issues which designers and planners must consider when making the selection of drop structure type. It also describes hydraulic modeling requirements which must be addressed before the final selection of drop structure geometry can be made. Hydraulics of drop arrangements, ground conditions, tunnel flow and filling characteristics, drop capacities, air release and odor control are examined as factors entering the final design selections. Innovative adaptations of proven designs in the US and abroad are also described.

These educational activities have been evaluated and accredited for 1.0 Professional Development Hour each by the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers to meet continuing education license requirements in New York
