The Life and Look magazine debates of the 1940’s and other trivia and rhubarb

Electrical Awareness
Hidden Dangers in the Workplace
presented
by Joseph Maida, PE
This one hour course is intended for commercial and industrial building
owners, employers, project engineers, and plant engineers who are directly or
indirectly responsible for providing a safe workplace environment. The
course will outline the current requirement for marking electrical equipment,
for the use of personnel protective equipment and for providing information
when working on or near electrical equipment.
Anyone working in the vicinity of electrical cabinets that
have energized live parts may be endangered and could receive an incurable 3rd
degree burn. Understanding when this hidden danger exists and what can be
done to lesson the hidden danger is essential to saving lives and reducing
injuries in the workplace.

Hydraulic Guidelines
for CSO Drop Shafts
Instructor: Jozef F. Zurawski,
PE
This one hour
course is intended for civil, geotechnical, sanitary and structural engineers
but will be of interest to project and plant engineers who work for or with sewer
and water and other utility companies.
Many interceptors and
Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) projects in the US
require deep tunnels for conveyance and/or storage of overflows to minimize CSO occurrences of untreated flows. Existing near surface
sewers must be connected to these deeper facilities requiring special drop
arrangements. This course provides overview of hydraulic and construction
issues which designers and planners must consider when making the selection
of drop structure type. It also describes hydraulic modeling requirements
which must be addressed before the final selection of drop structure geometry
can be made. Hydraulics of drop arrangements, ground conditions, tunnel flow
and filling characteristics, drop capacities, air release and odor control
are examined as factors entering the final design selections. Innovative
adaptations of proven designs in the US
and abroad are also described.
These educational activities have been evaluated and
accredited for 1.0 Professional Development Hour each by the Pennsylvania
Society of Professional Engineers to meet continuing education license
requirements in New York
